Eco-Friendly Farming System with Enhanced Fish Welfare

SIFT Group AS has developed an innovative, land-based fish farming concept for Atlantic salmon using Super-Intensive Farming Technology (SIFT). Fish are raised in animal-friendly vertical raceways, allowing for higher densities compared to traditional land-based farms.

In these raceways, temperature and oxygen levels are optimized, and water is continuously purified of waste particles, toxic gases, and metabolites. The vertical raceways can be stacked up to 10 independent levels, ensuring space efficiency. Operational costs (OpEx) for farming salmon in a SIFT system are estimated to be comparable to ocean net pens.

SIFT is now planning a full-scale commercial farm, with future expansion targeting 35,000 tons per year on a three-hectare plot outside Tromsø. The company has already secured a Norwegian pilot license for 20 tons per year, which will be gradually updated to accommodate the full-scale facility.

The next plan is to build an eight-level full-scale commercial farm to grow salmon from eggs to market size, with an annual capacity of 2,500 tons.
